“Inheritance of Belonging”
Public Viewing: September 12th – October 4th, 2026
Address: 2220 Commerce Street #D, Houston, TX
Mitochondria Gallery is honored to present “Inheritance of Belonging,” the North American debut solo exhibition by Rwandan visual artist, Hirwa Bless Ainé Jovial. Inheritance of Belonging reflects on how identity is shaped through family, culture, memory, and the everyday. Deeply rooted in Rwanda’s cultural landscape, Hirwa Bless Ainé Jovial’s work considers belonging as something we inherit, embody, question, and ultimately pass forward.
Central to the exhibition is an exploration of masculinity and the evolving role of men within family and society. Moving beyond conventional definitions of manhood, the works consider masculinity through care, responsibility, strength, tenderness, presence, and connection. Men are portrayed not only as providers or figures of authority, but as fathers, sons, brothers, and mentors whose everyday acts of care and commitment contribute to the strength of families, communities, and future generations.
The exhibition traces the values, behaviors, and understandings of manhood carried across generations, revealing how they shape identity, relationships, and belonging. It makes space for both inheritance and transformation, where masculinity can be reimagined through care, connection, responsibility, and presence.
Through intimate moments of everyday life, Hirwa Bless reveals the ways identity, family, and belonging are woven into one another. Inheritance of Belonging reflects on the legacies we inherit, the people we become, and the traces we leave for those who follow.

About The Artist
Bless Aine Jovial Hirwa (b. 2001) is a Rwandan visual artist whose practice is rooted primarily in painting, alongside drawing and mixed media. His artistic journey began at an early age through a fascination with drawing, particularly detailed studies of maps of Rwanda and the African continent. What began as an exploration of geography gradually developed into a deeper engagement with visual expression and artistic storytelling.
Hirwa studied at École d’Art de Nyundo, where he majored in Graphic Arts and developed his visual language within a dynamic community of artists. Following his studies, he established a studio practice grounded in experimentation, material exploration, and emotional storytelling.
His work explores themes of empowerment, transformation, memory, identity, and the psychological dimensions of human experience. Through textured surfaces, expressive brushwork, and layered processes, Hirwa creates works that move between reality and imagination. His practice draws from both historical and contemporary influences, including an early encounter with the work of Rembrandt, whose approach to light, emotion, and human presence left a lasting impression on his artistic development.
Hirwa’s paintings often function as symbolic spaces in which vulnerability and strength coexist. By combining personal narratives with broader human experiences, he invites viewers to reflect on resilience, self-discovery, identity, and transformation. His approach embraces ambiguity and emotional depth, allowing each work to become a space for contemplation and connection.
Beyond his studio practice, Hirwa engages with community-based initiatives, using art as a tool for dialogue, awareness, and social impact. Through continued experimentation and collaboration, he is developing an evolving body of work that connects personal and collective narratives while exploring the complexities of the human condition.
