Artist Talk /Q&A
Tell us a little bit about your painting style?
I classify my painting style as figurative abstract expression, because I love to infuse the duality between realism and abstraction.
I do this to create a subconscious environment and pass a message to my audience.
Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?
My name is Daniel Pengrapher Oshundaro. I am a visual artist from Nigeria. I grew up in Lagos and currently live in Serbia, Belgrade. I have a BA in art from the university of Lagos, and I was born on the 6th of December.
I first realized that I was into art at the age of 5. Any surface that I see, I like to scribble on in, or put a mark on it, to show that I was there. (laughs).
What is the message behind your art?
The message behind my art talks about real life problems and mental health. A lot of people are dealing with these kinds of situations.
So, my art is created to provide hope that there is a solution to solving these problems. It can also be a way out, or therapeutic for people who find themselves in such situations.
What inspires you, and how does your artwork represent you?
My inspiration comes from God, then I try to get inspiration from the renaissance period. I am also inspired by Pablo Picasso, Basquiat, and mostly the baroque artists.
With respect to how my art represents me, I would leave that for the critics to decide. That is because I am basically just trying to paint, and I just want to keep painting or keep creating till I go six feet under the ground. (laughs).
What is your favorite medium and favorite color?
My favorite medium is acrylic, I love how it is very hard to manipulate. So I either use acrylic in sprays or in jars, just to have a steady flow between two various types of acrylic paints.
As an artist, I do not have a favorite color. I just love to create, depending on the mood or the depending on the story I am trying to pass across. It could be a moody painting or a lively painting. Regardless of what I am painting, I use bright colors, medium, or deep colors. What ever color I lay my hands upon; I tend to use it to create.
