Demetrius Wilson

Demetrius Wilson’s paintings stage scenes of conflict in which bodies, landscapes, and beasts collide and fracture. Driven by restless mark-making and saturated color, his work approaches violence not as spectacle but as a generative force, one that ruptures form, destabilizes identity, and gives rise to new pictorial worlds. Human, animal, and hybrid figures emerge in fragments, suspended between isolation and collective struggle. Moving between ancestral and futuristic terrains, Wilson treats abstraction as a language of survival: a means of witnessing destruction while transforming it into visions that hold both ruin and renewal.

Shaped by an East Coast upbringing, Wilson draws from the cultural histories, technological shifts, and fragmented experiences that have defined his generation. Born in 1996, he came of age amid rapid technological transition, while a turbulent upbringing marked by frequent movement instilled an enduring sense of displacement, motion, and instability. These experiences inform a visual language that is restless and fluid, continually shifting between recognition and ambiguity.

Working primarily in oil, Wilson reformulates and recombines words, images, historical and contemporary paintings, memories, and cultural references. Through an ongoing process of revision and reconstruction, he creates compositions that simultaneously conceal and reveal their sources. As a Black abstract artist working in the contemporary moment, Wilson is invested in expanding access to art and creating visual avenues through which marginalized and historically overlooked communities can encounter, interpret, and participate in abstraction.

Wilson’s paintings are deeply concerned with the crepuscular, the liminal space between darkness and light, destruction and beauty, tension and resolution. Influenced by Ed Clark’s assertion that “the paint is the subject,” he approaches painting as both physical experience and psychological terrain. “We are beings born in and from darkness,” Wilson says, “so it’s no wonder why we find tragedy, violence and tension so attractive. But it is also in our nature to seek the light, truth, beauty, goodness.”

Combustion functions as a recurring conceptual force within Wilson’s practice. “Everything is on fire in my paintings,” he explains, treating fire not as a literal material process but as a metaphorical engine for transformation. Its capacity to burn, illuminate, radiate, and spread becomes a way of thinking through rupture and renewal. The perceived temperature of a painting its heat, glow, and intensity is as significant as its scale or palette.

Wilson lives and works in New York, NY. He received his MFA in Painting from Hunter College in 2024. Recent solo exhibitions include BAM! at Half Gallery and Begin the End at Harper’s, both in New York, and After shadow, at Red Arrow Gallery Nashville, Tennessee.
