“A Beautiful Game: Every Match Leaves a Mark”

Public Viewing: June 13th –  July 18th, 2026

Address: 2220 Commerce Street #D, Houston, TX

Mitochondria Gallery presents A Beautiful Game: Every Match Leaves a Mark, curated by Jackson Smith. This collective exhibition investigates soccer as a shared cultural inheritance and considers the ways artistic practice engages with the sport through memory, identity, community, ritual, and the rhythms of daily life. The exhibition brings together paintings, sculptures, and mixed media works that illuminate soccer as a global language capable of binding generations, cultures, and distant geographies.

The project reflects on how soccer becomes woven into both personal and communal experience. For some artists, the game evokes the intimacy of home, the tenderness of childhood, or the fervor of national pride. For others, it becomes a vessel through which to contemplate migration, devotion, popular culture, and questions of visibility and belonging. The works turn their attention to the world that forms around the sport and to the enduring traces it leaves upon communities and the everyday.

The exhibition unfolds alongside the FIFA World Cup group stages, during which Houston, Texas serves as a host city. The East Downtown neighborhood, home to Mitochondria Gallery, becomes the center of the FIFA Fan Festival and a site where global spectatorship meets local life.

The exhibition features works by Terence Ntsako Maluleke, Charles Middleton, Guy Stanley Philoche, Corey Ramon Gibson, Alpha Odhiambo, Bradley Theodore, Sunday Ernest Nnamal, and Sphephelo Mnguni.

About Jackson Smith

Born and raised in Houston, Jackson R. Smith is a Houston-based art collector, supporter of contemporary art, and avid follower of the global game of soccer. Smith’s passion for the sport extends beyond the pitch and into the ways soccer shapes culture, identity, style, and community around the world. His interest in both art and soccer serves as the foundation for A Beautiful Game, his first curatorial project.

Smith currently serves on the Board of Directors of Project Row Houses and The Contemporary Arts Museum Houston. Through his involvement with these institutions, he supports organizations that champion contemporary artists while strengthening Houston’s cultural landscape. His collecting practice focuses on contemporary works that explore lived experience, cultural memory, and the evolving narratives of the African diaspora.

A Beautiful Game reflects Smith’s personal perspective as both a collector and devoted soccer fan. Bringing together artists whose works capture the emotion, energy, and cultural reach of the sport, the exhibition explores how soccer transcends geography and language to become a shared global experience.
